As a band (and as individuals) we’ve [Beckament Band] decided to record everything at small to medium sized studios (even houses!) for several reasons… When we record in a large studio it’s a rushed experience, very little about it is enjoyable. We’re always thinking about how much it will cost rather than focusing 100% on making our music.
A lot of our best material comes after hours of jamming, hanging out, drinking, etc… (time costs $$ in a professional studio). We are always trying new recording techniques & sounds that are difficult and costly to achieve in a professional studio. At indie studios people are more willing to try new and different things. We need that type of environment to relax and play our best.
On top of saving money & being a less stressful environment, we don’t have to have financial backers (and producers) so that we always have 100% creative control of any project. While this lack of ‘respect?’ for the ways of the big business recording industry will probably keep us ’small time’ forever, we don’t really mind - any song we record is 100% ours (even the mistakes) and that’s the only way we can enjoy doing what we love.
